【JOHOR】A SHORT GETAWAY TO PULAU BESAR

Pulau Besar, also known as Pulau Babi Besar located just off the east coast of Johor.
Drawn to its white sandy beach and clear sapphire green ocean, my friends and I decided to make a summer dream getaway to one of the beautiful beaches in Mersing, Johor - Pulau Besar Island.

TRANSPORTATION

From KL to Mersing Jetty: By car
Mersing Jetty to Pulau Besar: By boat (included in the resort package)

We decided to drive all the way to Mersing jetty from KL so we could truly enjoy the whole journey. We parked our car at Mersing Jetty (RM15 per night), thereafter transfer to Pulau Besar by boat which included in our 3D2N Full Board Package.

ACCOMMODATION

We booked a 3D2N stays in D'Coconut Resort, one of the three resorts available in Pulau Besar. We took the 3D2N Full Board Package (RM506.68/person) which includes 2 breakfast, 2 lunch, 2 dinner and 2-way boat transfer from Mersing Jetty to Pulau Besar. Find out my full review on the resort here.

ACTIVITIES

Snorkeling Trip (RM80/person)
This is a guided trip to 3 different spots around Pulau Besar. We spent about 1-2 hours of snorkeling. There were corals and small fishes, unfortunately, no turtle spotted.

Beach trekking (Included in the hotel package)
The duration for the beach trekking took 1-2hours depending on our walking speed. We walked along the seaside, embrace the coastline rock formations, nature and the rocky shore.

Beach volleyball (included in the hotel package)
The locals in Pulau Besar play volleyball every evening, feel free to join them for a friendly match.

ITINERARY

Day 1
While we’re on our way to Mersing Jetty, we stopped by at the authentic Kluang Rail Coffee Shop for their famous bun and toast.

Registered ourselves at the D’Coconut Resort Office and wait for the office personnel to lead us to the jetty gate for departure. We left the jetty at 1pm, it was a 30 minutes boat ride to Pulau Besar.

We were greeted by the friendly staffs once we disembarked at the island. They helped us with our luggage and delivered to the resort. Nothing much to do on the first day besides exploring the island and playing volleyball in the evening. We also signed up for the morning snorkeling session at the reception.

Day 2
We were all ready and off we go! Snorkeling gears and life jackets were provided. We took a boat out to 3 different spots. This was my first time snorkeling because I’m afraid of fish! Still trying to conquer my fear

The first and third snorkeling spot was great. A shoal of fish swam across us when the boatman threw the bread into the ocean. My least preferred spot was the second snorkeling spot, it was so close to the corals and sea urchin. Besides, I felt the tingling sensation all over my body, it could be the sea lice bites. Hence, we spent lesser time here.

After the snorkeling session, we had our lunch before heading out for beach trekking. We walked along the beach and climbed over the rocks.

Day 3
The ocean water was bright and evenly illuminated on our last day in Pulau Besar. It was so beautiful. We took this chance to capture the perfect moment.

The boat was here at 1pm. It’s time to bid farewell.

Before heading back to KL, we stopped at a few places for food.

  • On The Road Cafe

  • Faris Kitchen, Muar

Pulau Besar is definitely a good place to getaway from the busy city life, reset your mind and soul. However, there are no water activities available such as jetski, banana boat, parasailing, etc.

TIPS

1) There are a lot of sand flies on beach, remember to bring Insect repellent.
2) Bring your own shampoo and body wash.
3) Bring enough of cash, there is No ATM available in Pulau Besar.
4) Most resorts closed on monsoon season (around November to February)
5) Beware of stepping on the sea urchins.
